We've tried to provide answers to some of the issues you might encounter using Fluenz software. You can also refer to the frequent questions section or contact the Fluenz Lab directly.

What happens if my computer has a CD player and not a DVD player?

Fluenz will only run on DVD players, because it is a DVD-ROM and not a CD-ROM.

Do I need a microphone to use Fluenz?

Two of Fluenz's most important workouts require a microphone to allow you to record yourself and practice your verbal expression. The software will run without a microphone, but you will miss one of the program's key elements. Both standard and USB microphones are supported.

How do I install a microphone in my computer?

Your computer might already have a microphone installed. If you don't like your computer's microphone, or you computer doesn't have one, there are a number of well-made accessory microphones on the market. Most of these come with an installer CD, which you should run before plugging the microphone into the (usually green) mic jack at the back of desktops or to the side of most laptops (usually next to the headphone jack). If you are using a USB microphone, these often do not require any intial installation. All Fluenz applications support both standard and USB microphones.

What if I'm having problems connecting my microphone to a PC?

For general problems follow these instructions:
Click Start > Programs > Accessories > Entertainment >Sound Recorder. If you can't make a successful recording there, try the following:

Click Start > Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Volume Control. Then click Options> Properties. Select "Recording", then check every single box in the lower part of the window, then click OK. In the "Microphone"column, make sure the volume is above the halfway point and the "Select" box is checked. Close the "Recording" window.

If that doesn't work, click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Sounds and Multimedia or Sounds and Audio Devices. Click the "Audio" tab. Check "Use only default devices" or "Use only preferred devices" at the bottom of the window and then click OK.

If using Windows XP, make sure you are logged in as an Administrator.

If on a PC you can record in Sound Recorder but not in Fluenz, try the following:

Click Start > Settings> Control Panel > Sounds and Multimedia or Sounds and Audio Devices. Click the "Audio" tab. Select "Use only default devices" or "Use only preferred devices" at the bottom of the window and click OK.

If that doesn't work, click Start > Settings > Control Panel. Click "Sounds and Multimedia" (or "Sounds and Audio Devices" or simply "Multimedia" this icon goes by various names in Windows). Click on the "Voice" tab and check your options under "Voice Recording" for "Default Device": Do you have other options besides the one automatically listed? If so, try one of the other options.

Also under the "Voice Recording" "Default Device", check the volume control for your microphone input.

Also under the "Voice Recording" "Default Device" click "Hardware Test" and do a test of your microphone outside of Fluenz.

For Windows Vista users: Enter the Sound Settings options of the Control Panel by clicking Start > Control Panel > Sound.

Click on the Recording tab that appears in the new window.

In this tab you will see all of the available devices through which you may record your voice. Select your preferred device and click on Configure.

You will then be presented with several different options to configure voice recognition. Choose Configure Microphone and follow the wizard in order to prepare your microphone for voice recording.

What if I'm having problems connecting my microphone to a Mac?

Fluenz is not compatible with the iSight microphone (iSight uses microphone and camera technology, which causes problems). If you're using iSight, please switch to another microphone.

For other issues go into "Sound" system preference (OS X) and make sure (a) the correct input device is selected, (b) the input volume is not too high or too low, and (c) the display is registering your voice when you speak into the microphone. If you're using an external microphone, make sure it is plugged into the correct port.
